Keep track of each sealing surface as you disassemble the engine. Before installing new gaskets, remove old material and inspect the mating surfaces for damage. Then clean each area so debris and old sealant do not interfere with the new gasket.

A larger teardown also gives you access to parts that are normally harder to inspect. Check the exposed engine components for wear or damage before reassembly. Address any problems you find while access is easy.
